Uber encourages its drivers to switch to electric vehicles

As part of the energy transition, Uber wants to drive more responsibly and launches the "UberGREEN" option on its application. This option has been implemented in some cities to offer electric car drives (hybrid, plug-in hybrid and 100% electric) at the same price as standard uberX trips.

For each trip made in UberGREEN, Uber reserves 1€ for the drivers. In France, 3400 hybrid and electric vehicles are available from the Uber application (which represents more than 10% of Uber vehicles).

Present in many cities in Europe and the United States, these electric drives reflect a cleaner mobility, and enable the company to anticipate rising fuel prices and the gradual banning of non-electric cars in city centres.

In London, Uber has already taken the lead with the "Clean Air" programme. Since January 2019, Uber has been charging London passengers additional fees if they choose a diesel or petrol vehicle. The long-term goal is to help all Uber drivers get rid of their thermal cars and replace them with electric cars by 2025. Cost of the operation: £200 million.

To achieve this, the fee amounts to 15 pounds per mile, which is paid to Uber drivers to enable them to buy a new electric or hybrid vehicle less and for those already equipped, to minimize maintenance costs.

The VTC leader estimates that this "Clean Air" programme will convert more than 20,000 vehicles in London by 2021.

Uber offers also a support system to get rid of the most polluting diesel cars and has established partnerships with companies developing charging stations to facilitate the use of electric vehicles for its drivers.

After electric cars in London, electric bicycles and electric scooters in Paris, Uber should continue to refine its mobility offer with electric motor scooters.

Uber's objective: to become an aggregator of mobility services and to display a sustainable image.
