The Common Modular Platform strategy: an industrial flexibility for the PSA Group

Updated: Nov 25, 2019

The automotive industry is experiencing the most diversified period in its history with multiple technologies (gasoline, diesel, hybrid, electric...) and the future emission standards Euro 7 in 2023 and Euro 8 in 2025, CO2 reduction targets (37.5% between 2021 and 2030) and financial penalties from 2021 onwards, also complicate the situation.

Therefore, PSA Group's strategy is global and the group has chosen to adapt its offer according to market developments, which will be dictated by regional regulatory constraints. The group will have complete coverage on the market by offering a varied "energy mix"; customers will have the choice of engine type: thermal, plug-in hybrid, diesel and 100% electric.

In order to avoid switching between electric car production and combustion cars, PSA has chosen to produce all cars on a multi-energy platform CMP (Commun Modular Platform) that will allow the same vehicle to be produced with different engines. It is the only automotive group in France to use this innovative process.

This will not affect the performance and competitiveness of the plants. Therefore, the group has the agility to vary the production mix and produce the same model in thermal, hybrid or electric versions depending on the controls.

Electric cars are created on the same basis as thermal cars. For example, the architecture of the Peugeot 208 is visually identical regardless of the engine (diesel, petrol or 100% electric). Thus, the CMP platform allows the PSA Group to adapt with agility and flexibility to market changes.

The assembly line for its electrified powertrains (eGMP) was inaugurated in Trémerys (France) on the production site, which is one of the pillars of the PSA group's electrification strategy. The new flexible assembly line will have a production capacity of 120,000 powertrains in 2020 and 180,000 in 2021. A technology that will equip all 100% electric models of the group's various brands, passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

This multi-vehicle and multi-energy manufacturing process reinforces the group's agility in the context of the energy transition. It is a key asset that will make the difference in the coming years, and a strong lever to support the electrification offensive and to achieve with the objective of manufacturing a 100% electrified range (electric or plug-in hybrid) for the five brands in 2025.
