BMW's Efforts on Popularize Electric Vehicle

Updated: Dec 1, 2019

When it comes to new energy vehicles, BMW is always at the forefront of luxury brands. As early as February 2011, BMW released the i-series, which mainly represents new energy vehicles and new transport solutions. In recent years, in addition to traditional fuel vehicles, BMW has devoted a large part of its efforts to new energy models development and popularize. In addition to the i3 and i8 pure electric models of the i-series, many BMW car series have launched plug-in hybrids.

At the same time, BMW continues to provide a large number of public charging stations and private charging stations around China to provide complete supporting services for new energy users. Therefore, BMW cooperates with two experienced charging operators, StarCharge and Teld. These two charge providers not only have strong technology and rich operating experience, but also the result of BMW's selection. Through cooperation with charging operators, the expansion of the charging network layout will speed up.

Therefore, in addition to cooperating with charging service operators, BMW has also strengthened its construction in the field of personal charging services. BMW provides free BMW charging wall boxes and basic installation services for new energy vehicle owners. By the end of 2017, BMW's private charging devices will be expanded to 100 cities across the country, covering 90% of first-tier to third-tier cities. The new-generation BMW charging wall box can charge 80% of the BMWi3 upgrade model in just 3.8 hours, and the charging speed is faster. Extensive network layout and fast charging will bring better user experience to domestic consumers.

According to the plan, the BMW Group will build a comprehensive new energy ecosystem through the construction of six major areas: research and development capabilities, battery technology, innovative technology, brand and product layout, charging networks, and electric mobility services.

"The Chinese market is the best environment for the BMW Group to implement its new energy strategy. We will also continue to increase our investment in new energy products and technologies." Gao Xiang, senior vice president of marketing for BMW Brilliance Automotive Co., Ltd., said that BMW is committed to China's new energy future. He believes that with the mass production of iX3, i4 and iNEXT, BMW's sales in China's new energy vehicle market will further increase its proportion globally.

In Gao Xiang's view, the electric vehicle market is full of challenges, but with the technological innovation and further reduction of future car costs, BMW believes that this market has a lot of opportunities in the future. “BMW has chosen a good time to enter the market for harvesting, and it is also a strategic choice." Gao Xiang said.

"At present, core battery parts such as power batteries and electric drive system assemblies remain at high prices. The complete vehicle cost of pure electric vehicles is still high in the short term, and the rollout and improvement of charging facilities will take at least five years. This leaves ample room for development of plug-in hybrid vehicles, "said Zhu Jun, deputy chief engineer of SAIC.
